A bright Shooting Star flower (Western Columbine) floats in front of a blurred forest background. The flower is upheld by a tender fresh green stalk and darker green leaves provide a backdrop for the red and yellow flower. The Shooting Star is found here in the Oregon wild areas. I find it one of the most compelling flowers found in the spring, out in nature. When I spent the spring in Yosemite California they were found all along the trails This image was captured in the Willamette National Forest at the feet Sister Mountain formation, near Bend in Oregon. Driving to Bend from the south you pass through fantastic forests. The spot this was taken was on the Old Mackenzie Highway. A large lupin flower, bursting with life in purple and white, dominates the scene. Its florets and leafy stalks are in sharp relief as a blurred background of, groves of trees, cleared slope, rolling hills and, in the great distance a snow capped mountain rises into the sky. White clouds are frozen in the sky over the far-off mountain. This lupin was found rather close to the parking lot of Timberline Lodge at Mt Hood. As you can see in the blurred slope below, there are numerous instances of lupins growing, doting the grasses with a purple smudges. June, July and early August are wildflower season at Mt Hood. Flowers are all over the the area and the variety of types is amazing. The backdrop presents the colors of the coming day as the sun hovers just below the slopes of Mt Hood. Oranges and yellows fill the medium between black ground and dark blueish sky. Closer, and in front of the distant activity a cloud elephant is rampaging as he pulls a river of thick gaseousness that swirls behind him. In the foreground is the dark icy flooring of the Mt Hood parking lot. This shot was taken early in the morning. I cannot recall if the cloud figures were moving forward or being press backwards. It was certainly an interesting shot to take, but I only saw the elephant once I started sorting images for editing. Without the elephant I think it would be a rather odd picture. I am glad he showed up ... Location: Lower Timberline Parking Lot Mt Hood Oregon Date & Time: November 11th 2020. 6:25 AM

An Early Morning Embrace - Rock formations at Arches National Park Utah clasp each other while bathed in rich morning light This is just one of the small examples of the many iconic rock formations that can be seen in Arches National Park. I got to the park early that morning while it was still dark outside. This image was captured at the end of my shooting session at 7:52. The directional light impassions the couple. Another scene at the Rockaway Beach area this photo was taken on June the 20th, 2020 in the evening at 7:10 PM. This scene of the coast is at the center of the city of Rockaway Beach. Fog is moving in on this lone women and the flock of birds behind her. The fortuitous rock with the arch in the background gave depth to obscuring fog moving in to eclipse it.

A stark bank of white trees line the end of a snow-covered field. Behind them is a second line of half-size red bushes, In the rear, a brown scrub-covered hillock with snowy patches rises to meet the blue sky. In front of the white trees is a field still covered in snow with irrigation apparatus lying idle and seemingly abandoned. This picture was taken along highway 20 in Southern Idaho. The location is near Picabo and west of Craters Of The Moon National Park. The morning drive along this section of road yielded many strange and seemingly unnatural images. In a glistening white patch of icy snow the scraggly, top stems of a bush push through the top of the snow's surface. The contrast between the dark branches and the white snow creates an overall simplicity to the image. Spring is some way off and the plant waits patiently for its new growth to emerge. I liked the simplicity of these small branches of some equally small ground plant juxtapositioned against the unbroken snow surrounding them—the rough against the serene. Last embers of sunset radiates low clouds surrounding Mt Rainier. In foreground small glacial lake reflects the last glows of the sun while surrounded by rich grasses and conifer pines. Mount Rainier is one of North Americas Most impressive mountains. More impressive even than Mt Hood in Oregon. Which is nearby. I arrived at this location just about the time that this picture was taken. I watched the impressive sunset take place over the mountain and this lake for about half and hour. There were fishes jumping in the lake as insects alighted upon the water. Some shots of Mt Rainier are not that impressive. The camera does not seem to capture its majesty. Whereas Mt Hood is easy to photograph. Curious. Photograph Taken: Auguset 3rd, 2020 at 8:45 PM

Low tree lined hills surround a small valley or Hollow. Above the hills, yet still low in the sky, the sun is rising all but obscured by a blanket of cloud cover. Pale yellow light cast illumination on the green fields in the foreground. Fields surround a small clutch of trees seated in a shallow depression. The nearest major city to where this photo was taken would Missoula Montana. It is also very near the border of Idaho. Idaho is one of the most beautiful States in the Union. Though the advertising says otherwise. It is not a flat piece of land where potatoes are grown, but terrain filled with small and large valleys and beautiful rapid rivers that have mist rising from them in the evenings. The scene is of a large room dominated by 3 huge window panels. The window panels are a crisscross of smaller windows fitted into wooden frames. On either side of the windows are multicolored drapes of an elegant, rich material. On the other side of the windows it is icy cold and a snow storm is raging blowing snow laden pine trees to and fro,. Ice clings to the outside edges of some of the windows. In the foreground, one is able to ascertain that there are an assortment of plush chairs and sofas. However the foreground is large dark. In the ceiling you can see the huge beams of wood that this building's structure is made of. In the middle of the ceiling is a half oval Art Deco light of orange hue, which looks like it is more for style than effect. This image was shot November 10th. So we are getting well into winter at Mt Hood. I arrived at the Timberline Lodge parking lot just about the time it was starting to snow. Temperatures dropped and we were looking at a very cold, windy and snowing night. When I get in mountainous area covered in snow and where the outside temperature is in the sub zero range my mind drifts to the Donner Party who got caught up crossing the Sierras in the middle of the winter of 1846 with no Lodge at hand for hundreds of miles. That some of them were able to survive in such horrific cold for months, is a testament to the will to survive ... And a flexible diet. Power Outage - Lightning From The Front Porch - 1983

This image was taken at 8:15 on July 29th, 2020 along the Oregon coast in a place called Otter Rock. It reminded me directly of a tropical sunset or perhaps a sunset in Kalahari Park in South Africa. It did not seem to me to be a typical Oregon coast scene. Otter Rock is in the Northern Half of the Oregon coastline. Between Depoe Bay and Newport City.

In the foreground a maverick cow grazes on the remaining harvest vegetation of last year's crop. His companion herd is someway away towards a farmhouse settlement. Juxtaposed with this single cow is a 2/3rds full moon at a great height above the pastoral scene below. The air appears calm and stable as we spy in the distance more farmhouses, a barn, and other settlements. It is early morning and the sun has not made a complete breakthrough in lighting up the area fully. Towards the back of the picture are velveteen hills smooth and flowing Driving along highway 97 early in the morning through Yakama Nation I first spotted the rather impressive moon. Then I spied the lone cow. Could I put those two things thing together? I had to try. It wasn't easy and they barely fit. I would have liked to have empty empy sky space above the moon. I didn't get that, but the way t is gives the picture some tautness. Which I think works well for this picture. An old gracefully falling apart large Red Barn with a speckled black and grey roof stands at the edge of a green field with grey clouds above. Barn looks unused but strangely has the sense of being well maintained, It has deteriorated with a sense of dignity rather than one of chaos. How many more years with it be there laughing at passerby's? Lakeview is roughly in the middle of Southern Oregon, some handful of miles from the California border. It is right next to the road on Highway 395. Highway 395 is an alternate route to Highway 5 which is the modern highway linking California, Oregon and Washington. Three scraggly, worn, spindly, leafless trees stand next to an old farmhouse whose edifice is falling off but whose structure implies a certain amount of structural strength. It is not collapsing into a heap.. Brown fields surround the house and. a grey gravel road runs past the house This picture was taken near the town of Vale on the Oregon/Idaho border. A short drive from the city of Boise. Interestingly, though boards are falling off the front of the building, the roof is shot and the windows lost any evidence of any glass a long time ago, the basic structure of the farmhouse is intact and does not appear in a state of imminent collapse. It is a dreary-looking day with an unkempt tree windbreak and a sorely neglected and abandoned house. This photo was captured on May 15th 2020 at 5:15. It is taken through a scratched heavy duty window of the ferry traveling between Port Townsend WA and Whidbey Island. I was intrigued by the composition of the port bollards as viewed through the scratched ferry window. It wasn't until I edited the picture I realized that there was a bird curled up on the upright of the pier. The upright closest to the ferry closest to the ferry.

Early morning light streams through the windows of the Rams Head bar in Timberline Lodge, Rows of bottles & glasses line the shelves after the windows but before the wooden bar. The sunrise's light bounces off, refracts against, and is absorbed by the glassware. A pull-down gate makes the hard liquor unobtainable as the bar is closed. A Ram's head is part of the metal filigree. This is the Ram Head bar on the Timberline Lodge's second floor. The Timberline Lodge is the home base for one of the largest recreation areas on Mt Hood, Oregon. The sun has just come up over the edges of Mt Hood and is blazing through the bar's windows. DescriptionSunset At Mt Hood - The peak of Mt Hood, touched lightly by a yellow-red light, peeks above the imposing Timberline Lodge super structure at the base of Mt Hood. So you do not get to see a lot of Mt Hood in this image. However the tip of the summit hit here by sunset light should make you want to see more of the scenery. In the foreground is Timberline Lodge. One of the many National Lodges built and owned by the public. It is a majestic building both inside and out. Rivaling the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite Valley. The picture here is just one part of one wing of the building. The quality of food served at the Timberline matches the elegance of the surroundings. Prices are surprisingly reasonable. Something that cannot be said of the food at the Yosemite's Ahwahnee. Timberline was also the Hotel imagined in the Movie 'The shining". The horror movie that starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The opening scene of the Movie is a long drive up to a Hotel that is the Timberline. The road shown is not the correct road to Timberline, but the building shown in the movie shows you the full edifice of Timberline Lodge. The lodge is open to the general public until 11 PM. But they will not throw you out if you are already inside. Mt Hood provides skiing late into the summer by repeatedly grooming a semi-permanent glacier on its slope. Shock of grain embedded in barbed wire fence gives way to dirt road, old falling apart storage shed, and cleanly harvested grain field. In the sky, looking more like the moon than the sun, is the cloud shrouded sun. Newly risen it lies behind pale shredded clouds. More wispy clouds on the right form the shape of a huge bird. The sky is dark blue and the light of the whole scene is dark as in twilight or very early morning in a sub zero climate. In the foreground lies a paved road leading deep into the terminus of the focal point. No vehicles can be seen on the road. It is desolate. To the right and behind a haphazard fence lies a shallow snow covering dotted with vegetation pushing through, This picture was taken early in the morning and it was very cold out. Something about the coldness, the atmosphere, the altitude gave pictures taken this day an otherworldly sense to them. The sun presented itself similar to this picture. The clouds were anemic but had a huge effect on the pictures that were taken. It was an interesting day to have a camera in hand. In the near distance an isolated farm with barn and other buildings lies in the midst of a large field where the green grass has only recently broken through the sod. To the right and away the glowing sun is nearing its end for the day. The sun puts out a pale yellow, somewhat anemic light over the scene. As though the sun did not have the energy to do its job for the hours that were required. You see this kind of rural scene many places on the eastern portion of the state of Oregon. This is the beginning of spring and the tuffs of last years cut crop still dominate the field. it will be some weeks yet before this year's crop will over-shadow last years leavings. I had to work quickly to catch the last bit of sun on this distant butte before it quickly disappeared. This shot is taken deep within the Arches National Park. It is close to the area that has the iconic Arch that defines the Park. Arches is a very impressive Park and well worth the visit if you are in The West. This photograph was taken early in the morning on March 12, 2022 It was a fantastic and perplexing sky that morning with the lighting you see here in this picture and similar ones taken the same morning. Some of the best coastal scenery can be found along the Oregon and California sections of Highway 101. This image was taken just south of Port Orford in southern Oregon. The lighting for this location was so representational and changing that I spent about an hour and a half parked by the side of the road just taking one picture after another until any traces of the sunset had finally vanished. Gold Beach Oregon is a great location for taking coastal landscapes. It is filled with interesting rock formations out in the water and on land. Gold Beach is at the south-end of the Oregon coastline. Very close to the border of California. The location in the picture is at the southern extent of Gold Beach. I was taken by the silky smoothness of the sand broken by crisscrossing tracks. The picture was taken on August 20th, 20-2020 in the afternoon at 1:44 PM. So at that date with COVID spreading it is perhaps justification for the lack of more evidence of human wanderings.

In the distance, lightly obscured by retreating fog, a long promontory of green vegetation-covered rock runs out to the sea. At the end of this spit of land is a striking white lighthouse with a jet black turret. The rocky sides of the promontory's cliffs are exposed revealing chalky, and grey-brown colors. Huge individual rocks have separated themselves from the bulk of the promontor., Standing alone in the seawater these castoffs look like an irregular henge of ancient stones. DescriptionA vibrant old growth redwood forest begins at the foot of a large Redwood tree. All around this Redwood is a close of trees, trunks and branches. Looking up and to the distance it can be seen that fog is moving in and around the tops of the trees. Moss on the trunk of the main tree is testament to the high moisture content of this grove near the Pacific Ocean. Ferns litter the forest floor. This picture was taken in Redwood National Park which is near the coast in Northern California. I stopped at the Big Trees Wayside and took one of the trails into the forest. I was amazed at how quiet it was and how calm the ambience of the environment. Hushed one would say. The Redwood Tree in they photo, was by no means one of the biggest ones. The large ones are truly massive. To get to Redwood National Park you need to turn off of highway 101 and onto The Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway.

This image was taken on a scenic overlook on highway 1 between Gold Beach and Brookings in Oregon. The dried out grass you see in the picture that looks like a rattlesnake's tail is "Greater Quaking Grass". I believe that the red flower that is emerging is "Indian Paintbrush" . I initially removed the grass stalks that are in front of the Indian Paintbrush. When done I thought the image was more interesting just left as shot. Image capture August 20th, 2020 at 2:07 PM.
